Joyful learning is our goal and everything that is learnt is through games or activities. This gives the child opportunities to learn each concept through different methods. Actually it is the play-way method of the pre-primary extended to the primary level too. As English is not the mother tongue of over ninety percent of the children of our school, and some children even now are first generation learners, learning takes place through learning by doing, first-hand experiences and field trips. Hence language comes alive and is used spontaneously as well as creatively. Colourful, attractive, appropriately displayed charts and pictures build the atmosphere of the classroom. Sequentially graded activity cards help the children to work at their pace. Innovative teacher-made teaching-aids add to the joy of learning. The Project method is followed to kindle interest and enhance the creativity in both the learner and the taught, whereby a good deal of in-depth work can be done on each topic. Subjects are not isolated. They are integrated and hence learning is made meaningful. e.g. Whenever we work on vegetables or fruits it is interwoven with a shop put up and actual money transaction taking place. Besides all this, dramas, puppet shows, film-strips add to the variety of ways of teaching. A great deal of freedom is given to the children to express themselves and one can observe the total informality in the classrooms. |
